Tell us a bit about yourself. Why are you a wine geek?
Hey! I'm Nicholas, the winemaker and proud owner of Mural City Cellars, a new urban winery in Philadelphia. I am fascinated by wine and the process of making it because I love that you can take a simple thing (a grape) and it becomes totally expressive and exemplary of so many different flavor profiles through a natural process. I just think it's interesting.
.
Extraterrestrials just landed on earth. What wine do you pour them?
Bubbles of course! It's a celebration so we're popping a bottle of sparkling dry Riesling from upstate NY.
.
What's your favorite scent you have ever smelled in a wine?
I'm intrigued by this rubber, petrol scent that you typically get from Alsatian whites.
.
Any favorite music or podcasts you like to listen to while you drink wine?
During the day at the winery, I blast some Phish. I like those super long up-tempo jam band songs especially while bottling, which can get monotonous. At night, an entire Drake album.
.
If you could visit any wine region in the world right now what would it be any why?
Well considering its 20 degrees in Philly right now, I'm headed straight to Chile on the other side of the equator to drink high-acid Sauv Blanc and eat ceviche on the beach.
.
What do you think is the most exciting thing going in the world of wine right now?
The rise of the urban winery! I just think it's so cool to see small businesses open during a time like this and the support of the neighborhood, in turn, brings attention to new regions that historically have been overlooked.
.
What would you like to see in the future of wine?
Better price points, like the 5 euro model in Europe, Good wine doesn't have to be expensive.
.
What advice would you give yourself looking back to when you first started working in the wine industry?
Stay the course, because everyone is going to have something to say. People told me I was crazy for wanting to open a winery in Philly.. and here we are!
.
Who are some people that inspire you in the world of wine?
All the East Coast winemakers working with hybrids, fighting the weather, and eschewing tradition!
.
Anything in the works you'd like to mention or promote?
@MuralCityCellars is partnering with @HeathenWineTours to take twelve lushes on an all-inclusive bad-ass trip to the Finger Lakes in July!
