When I first started getting into wine, my grape of choice was Gamay. It was and still is a top pick among many fellow wine geeks. Gamay was a frequent choice at tastings and I loved to sell it at the wine bar where I used to work. The Gamay wines I enjoyed were generally light-bodied and featured enticing violet aromas, with an elegant balance of punchy fruit and earthiness.
However, it's now become challenging to find good Gamay for under $20. Almost impossible to come across Cru Beaujolais for under $30. And due to the increase in warmer vintages (climate change) harder to find ones under 14% alcohol. When I tell people, especially those new to the wine industry, about my love for Gamay, it feels a bit like saying I enjoy Early 2000s emo/dubstep music, skinny jeans, the laugh-cry emoji, and a side part.
But you know what? I really still do. LOL
I make this comparison because nowadays there are so many underrated regions and grapes that overdeliver at the current average Cru Beaujolais price point. There are more alternative value options in the market than ever before. When speaking about delicious, quality, under $30 Gamay it can feel like a relic of the past.
There are, however, still some Gamays I like out there that are under $30
Here's a quick list:
